Bovis Lend Lease In Indian Water Supply And Treatment Deal
Bovis Lend Lease is conducting a feasibility study for a five-year contract to supply water and sewage treatment services to the Indian city of Bangalore, the fast-growing ‘silicon valley’ of the subcontinent.
A memorandum of agreement has been signed between the Government of Kamataka and the French corporate giant, Suez Lyonnaise des Eaux (SLdE) – a consortium of companies that comprises Bovis Lend Lease, a world leader in project and construction management, and Northumbrian Water Group, a fully-owned subsidiary of SLdE.
The memorandum details that water provision and sewage treatment in Bangalore will be divided between SLdE and another major French corporate water supplier, Vivendi Water.
The pioneering initiative will see the two companies operate two distinct pilot projects within Bangalore, each covering one million people. The two companies already manage 70 per cent of the worldwide private sector water and wastewater market.
Bovis Lend Lease has earned the name as a world leader in wastewater and sewage management through a series of billion dollar projects around the globe.
These projects have included the construction of the world’s largest water treatment plant at Prospect in Sydney’s western suburbs. The plant, on the foreshores of Prospect Reservoir, processes up to 3000 megalitres a day to supply quality drinking water for four million Sydney residents.
Sir Frank Lampl, Group President, Bovis Lend Lease said: “We are very happy that Bovis Lend Lease will be able to use its global experience to assist in the provision of a world-class water and wastewater system for Bangalore.
“As we already have established operations throughout India, including a head office in Bangalore, we are familiar with the environment and look forward to the challenges ahead.“
The Indian water project will also tackle major environmental challenges. It will set the benchmark in ecologically sound and cost-effective Indian water and sewerage management.
“Water is a precious resource in Bangalore, and the city’s water and sewerage system needs to be brought up to international standards while still meeting the growing needs of the booming population and technology industry,“ Sir Frank said.
Bovis Lend Lease has a worldwide reputation for providing environmentally sustainable solutions for major projects. This expertise has been developed through involvement with a number of ecologically sensitive projects, including the construction of Australia’s first chemical-free sewage treatment works in Noosa, on the NSW north coast.
Bovis Lend Lease is also currently involved in another international project with environmental significance - the $400 million Manukau project, New Zealand’s largest construction project.
This project will rehabilitate the foreshore of Manukau Harbour, the ancestral fishing grounds of a local Maori tribe, as well as provide Auckland City with a modern sewage processing facility with increased capacity.
Advanced biological nutrient removal technology will be used to remove pollution from the harbour and to oxygenate and break down the sewage.
The first stage of the Manukau project is completed, with three giant reactor vessels now on-line. The five-year project is expected to be completed in 2003.media
