Greenwich Peninsula Regeneration Plans on Track

  • Planning application submitted to London Borough of Greenwich
  • Comprehensive 20-year regeneration of the Peninsula proposed
  • 10,000 new homes, including thousands of affordable homes
  • New employment space, new shops, a new school, local transport improvements
  • A world-class 26,000 maximum capacity entertainment & sports Arena inside the Dome
  • A new hotel and areas of public open space and parkland
  • Ultimately will see a community of 20,000 residents and 24,000 jobs

Meridian Delta Ltd (MDL), English Partnerships (EP) and Anschutz Entertainment Group Europe (AEG) will this week submit a planning application to the London Borough of Greenwich for the comprehensive regeneration of the Greenwich Peninsula, including the Dome. This is in line with the timetable announced when contracts were exchanged with Government in May and paves the way for a new community to be created on the Peninsula. Work could start in mid-2003 depending on planning approval.

The Masterplan accommodates around 10,000 new homes during the 20 year life of the regeneration, including thousands of affordable homes to be developed and occupied at the same time as the for-sale housing. The exact number and mix of affordable homes will be determined in discussion with the relevant authorities as part of the standard planning application process.

New office and retail space will bring 24,000 long-term jobs to the Peninsula, whilst the Dome itself will provide a world class entertainment and sporting destination for London based around a new 26,000 maximum capacity Arena (22,000 seats). The regeneration will also see significant local transport improvements and new areas of public open space, parkland and a complete river walk and cycle way around the Peninsula.

David Hutton of Lend Lease, said today:

“The opportunity to create a new urban community in central London is very rare and brings with it a great responsibility. The Masterplan we are submitting is the result of an enormous amount of detailed work and consultation and creates a place where people will enjoy living, working and visiting. This will be a comprehensive sustainable regeneration, integrated with a world class entertainment and sporting destination at the Dome.

“We will create a vibrant new urban community with high quality public spaces and parkland, based around a tube and bus station with many car-free streets and pedestrian only areas. By focusing on the requirement for new homes, we are responding to the needs of Greenwich and London.

“The submission of this application meets the timetable we set out in May and we are on track with all areas of our work programme. We look forward to continuing to work with the London Borough of Greenwich, the Greater London Authority, English Partnerships and our neighbours on the Peninsula and in Greenwich as the planning application is taken forward.”

Nick Shattock of Quintain, said today:

“We said in May that we saw an opportunity for thousands of new homes on the Peninsula – including significant provision of affordable housing – and we will deliver this. The affordable housing will be built and occupied along-side the for-sale homes during the life of the 20 year regeneration.

“The exact levels of affordable housing and the mix of homes and tenures provided will depend upon the outcome of continued discussions with the London Borough of Greenwich, the GLA and English Partnerships as the planning application is considered. This is a standard process and we are committed to providing homes on the Peninsula for people of varying circumstances and backgrounds.

“Depending on planning approval, we hope to be able to start the regeneration in mid 2003.”

Detlef Kornett, Managing Director of AEG Europe said,

“The Dome Arena will provide London with one of the finest entertainment and sports venues in the world and create hundreds of new jobs for the area. Together with new bars, restaurants and other leisure facilities around the Arena, visitors will be offered a vibrant environment in which to enjoy the variety of events.

“We have been working with MDL and English Partnerships to ensure that the final Masterplan takes into consideration the needs of the community who will live and work in the Peninsula and those of the wider London population. We are confident that this will be achieved.

“Having hosted everything from Madonna to the Rolling Stones and the Academy Awards at our other venues around the world, AEG is well placed to deliver an exceptional Arena which will create a new entertainment destination for London.”
